Dr. Shannon Martin recently selected the Fountain Clinic as her charity of choice for a $500 donation. In 2020, Dr. Martin was selected as Oaklawn’s 2019 Physician of the Year, an honor that allows the recipient to direct a $500 donation to any charity they would like.
The Fountain Clinic is dedicated to helping individuals whose yearly income is below 250% of the federal poverty level, and are uninsured or underinsured. It is staffed by a nurse practitioner and volunteer physicians, dentists and physician assistants. In addition to being a provider at Oaklawn, Dr. Martin has worked with the Fountain Clinic for years to provide ophthalmic examinations and treatments to their patients.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, she feels that the community is especially fortunate to have an organization, like the Fountain Clinic, that provides much needed medical services to those without healthcare during such difficult times.
“There are so many hardworking people in our area that find themselves at one time or another uninsured or underinsured,” Dr. Martin said. “I can’t imagine the burden of having health issues without insurance or other means to get treatment.”
Taught to live by the Golden Rule, she believes it’s important to treat others the way you would want to be treated. “I am happy to have the opportunity to give a small donation to help support the noblest of causes: taking care of each other.”
